- Spa placement and how landscaping will frame the water

2. Choosing the wrong proportions Bigger isn’t automatically better, and neither is adding curves or ledges just because there’s room. A custom concrete pool isn’t limited to predetermined dimensions — length, width, depth, steps, benches, and spa should all be sized to fit the property, not a catalog shape.
3. 4. Poor tile installation and material transitions Beautiful tile only looks beautiful when it’s installed well. Pay attention to:

- Spillways and step transitions
- Spa walls and material changes
- Cuts around fittings

5. Treating coping as an afterthought Coping frames the pool and sits closest to where you’ll actually be. Whether it’s travertine, bluestone, marble, or porcelain, the layout, cuts, corners, joints, and transition to decking matter as much as the material itself.
6. Making the spa look added on We consider a spa’s size, shape, elevation, spillway, veneer, tile, seating, and relationship to the house. Sometimes a raised spa becomes an architectural focal point; other times a flush spa reads cleaner and more contemporary. Either way, it should look like it belongs to the pool — not like it was attached afterward.
7. Ignoring the view from inside the house A well-positioned pool creates a beautiful view from the kitchen, great room, or primary bedroom — 365 days a year, whether or not anyone’s swimming. During design, we think about where the spa and water features will appear from indoors, how landscaping will frame the water, and whether equipment or utilities will be visible.
8. Poorly planned lighting A pool that looks great by day should look just as good after sunset. Poorly positioned lights create glare and harsh shadows; thoughtful lighting highlights steps, benches, spas, and water features, and coordinates with landscape lighting around the property. The goal is atmosphere, not maximum brightness.
9. Forgetting drainage and elevations Raleigh-area properties often have real grading and stormwater challenges. Before construction, it matters how water moves across the property relative to the house, patios, retaining walls, and landscaping. Good drainage is something you never notice — poor drainage is something you notice every time it rains.
10. Hiding poor construction under beautiful finishes Before the tile and coping go in, there’s an entire structure underneath: excavation, steel reinforcement, plumbing, hydraulics, gunite, electrical, bonding, drainage, waterproofing. It’s not what makes it onto Instagram, but a luxury pool needs to be built beautifully where you can’t see it, too.
11. Choosing materials without considering the house A pool shouldn’t speak a completely different design language than the home. Instead of asking “what pool tile do I like,” we ask “what materials will make the pool feel like part of this home?” — a very different, and better, conversation.
12. Not Planning the Entire Outdoor Environment
