Chlorine is the most common and well-known pool sanitizer choice for many pool owners. According to the CDC, the water in most swimming pools should contain 2-4 ppm (parts per million) of chlorine. Chlorine is used to disinfect harmful bacteria and algae, and oxidize (chemically destroy) other materials such as dirt and chloramines. A heavy chlorine odor means that unhealthy chloramines have formed in the pool water. Chloramines, or combined chlorine are created from the mix of chlorine and the waters contaminants. Chlorine exists as a solid, a liquid and a gas. The strength of each type is determined by the amount of chlorine within the material that is effective both as a disinfectant and an oxidizer. Proper chlorination and filtration gives pool water its clear sparkling appearance.
At Parrot Bay Pools and Spas, UV pools are the most popular pool sanitizer. UV light neutralizes harmful bacteria while using less chlorine. Ultraviolet Light zaps harmful microorganisms in your pool in a matter of seconds. UV sanitation has all the positive effects of salt without the corrosive effects of the high pH. UV sanitizes the water, has no odor, and keeps your pool bacteria free with no itchy skin or burning eyes.
Saltwater pools are another low-chlorine option. Saltwater pools use salt to generate chlorine at a lower level, which tends to be gentler on eyes and skin. Many people are shocked when they discover that salt water pools are not chlorine free. When the salt passes through a salt cell, it receives an electric charge which breaks the salt down to chlorine. It does this consistently to keep free chlorine high and chloramines low. Free chlorine is what keeps your pool sanitized and clear, while chloramines are what cause skin and eye irritation with a strong chlorine smell. Chloramines or combined chlorine is the free chlorine that has already been “used up” to sanitize your water. Salt water pools offer low chloramine levels with a balanced salinity level to provide comfortable water that does not irritate or smell. Saltwater pools tend to run a high pH and need it to be adjusted weekly.
If you are interested in going with a non-chlorine system, we recommend Pristine Blue. It provides some advantages over chlorine if you are looking to get rid of the “chemical” odor and side effects that may come with a chlorine pool. Pristine Blue is gentle on both the skin and eyes, and is safe to swim in right after application. There are six different products that make up the Pristine Blue Non-Chlorine water system. Pristine Blue is the cornerstone of the system, it works as an algaecide and kills bacteria while being environmentally friendly. Pristine Clean works against scale and metal build up. Pristine Power is a non-chlorine shock that dissolves quickly and removes organisms, contaminants, body oils, sunscreen and make-up. Pristine Extra is a di-chlor based shock that is used for initial startup. Pristine Clear is used as a clarifier for clearing cloudy water. Pristine Check is used to prepare the water before startup and collects all the excess calcium in the water before introducing Pristine Blue.
A chlorine-free system that is classified as a Biguanide, which is a non-bleach/halogenic product whose main oxidizing component is hydrogen peroxide. If you decide to use Baquacil, you must use their line of oxidizers and algaecides that work specifically with the main sanitizer. You may use other brand balancers such as; pH plus, pH minus, Alkalinity, and Calcium. The total package you get from Baquacil is known as the Baquacil CDX System. This system includes the sanitizer, algistat, oxidizer and water clarity product. It is a safe, easy and chlorine free way to maintain a clean and clear well-balanced pool.
The Pool FROG Mineral Water System utilizes a patented formula of sanitizing minerals along with a low level of chlorine to destroy bacteria. The FROG System feeds small amounts of copper or silver into the pool with combined minerals and salt for soft and clean pool water. With the convenient maintenance of either the floating chemical dispenser or an automatic mineral system, it is the ultimate delivery of a no mess, no guess and no stress water care system for swimming pools.
